About ToolVaults
What this is
ToolVaults is a hobby project — built and maintained by one person in their spare time. It’s two things in one: a collection of honest guides on software and physical products, and a free browser-based toolbox built from scratch. Nothing serious, just something useful that grew into its own thing.
The guides cover comparisons, roundups, and how-tos — written to actually help you decide, not to push you toward whichever product has the best affiliate rate. The browser utilities (149 of them, across 14 categories) handle everyday tasks like JSON formatting, PDF merging, unit conversion, and QR codes — right in the tab, nothing sent to a server.
Who writes this
One person with a software development background who got tired of reading affiliate-stuffed reviews. The guides are written from direct hands-on testing — not press releases, not vendor demos. When a product isn’t worth it, that’s what the guide says. When the free tier is genuinely good enough, that’s the recommendation, not the paid plan.
The browser tools are built from scratch in-house — not wrappers around third-party APIs. Everything runs locally in your tab.
How guides are produced
Every guide starts with hands-on use of the products covered — not press releases, vendor briefings, or second-hand summaries. For software comparisons, that means signing up for free trials or using products long-term. For physical product roundups, it means reading teardowns, long-term owner reviews, and published test data from credible sources.
- No pay-to-play. A product’s position in a guide reflects its merit, not whether its maker has a commission program or reached out.
- Honest limitations. Every guide that recommends something also says when it’s not the right fit and points to alternatives.
- Updated when things change. Pricing, features, and competitive landscapes shift. Guides are revisited when the products they cover make meaningful changes.
- Corrections welcome. If a fact is wrong or outdated, get in touch and it will be fixed with a note.
Why it exists
Honestly? Frustration with how bad most “best tools” content is. Search for “best password manager” and you get whichever product pays the highest referral rate — not whichever one is actually best. ToolVaults tries to do the opposite: cover what’s genuinely good, say when something isn’t worth it, and recommend the free option when it holds up against paid alternatives.
The browser toolbox started as a personal thing — small utilities I kept building for myself. At some point it made sense to put them somewhere public. Now both sides of the site live together.
The rules I try to follow
- No affiliate spam. Products aren’t recommended because they have a commission program. When there’s a link out, it’s because the product earned it.
- Free-first. If a free option is genuinely competitive, that’s what gets recommended — it won’t be buried to push a paid one.
- Local by default. Every browser tool runs on your device. Nothing you type or paste is sent anywhere.
- No accounts. Nothing requires signing in. Tool state lives in your browser — it stays with you.
- Works offline. Install ToolVaults as a PWA and the tools work without a connection.
