Frequently asked
How many named colors exist?
147 in the CSS3 / SVG 1.1 spec — including 17 that were in HTML 4 and a large batch that came from the X11 color list. "rebeccapurple" was added in memory of Rebecca Meyer in 2014.
What does "nearest" mean?
We compute Euclidean distance in RGB space. It's a rough perceptual match — not as accurate as CIELAB distance but fast and good enough for most uses.
Are these safe to use in modern CSS?
Yes — every browser has supported all 147 for over a decade. You can write `color: rebeccapurple` and it just works.
