How to Set Up a Home Network
Most home networks take under an hour to set up correctly. Here is the full process, from picking equipment to securing your Wi-Fi.
Setting up a home network sounds technical until you do it once. The actual process is connecting three or four cables, logging into an admin panel, and choosing a Wi-Fi password. It takes under an hour start to finish. The harder part is buying the right equipment up front so you are not buying it again in two years.
This guide covers the full process: equipment selection, physical setup, router configuration, security basics, and whether you actually need a mesh system.
What you need
A home network has two pieces of hardware: a modem and a router. They are different things, often confused because ISPs bundle them together.
- Modem. Connects your home to your ISP’s network. Most ISPs rent you one for $10-15 per month. After 6-8 months, buying your own ($60-100) is usually cheaper. Check with your ISP for a list of compatible models before buying.
- Router. Distributes the internet connection inside your home, both wired (ethernet) and wireless (Wi-Fi). A Wi-Fi 6 router in the $80-150 range (TP-Link Archer AX55, ASUS RT-AX58U, or similar) handles most homes without issue.
- Ethernet cables. Cat 5e or Cat 6. Run a cable to anything that stays in one place: TV, desktop computer, gaming console, NAS. Wired connections are faster and more reliable than Wi-Fi and require no configuration.
Step 1 — Get your equipment in order
Before you start plugging anything in, confirm you have the following:
- A working modem (rented from ISP, or a compatible unit you purchased)
- A router, kept separate from the modem
- The coax, phone, or ethernet cable that comes from your wall (this is the ISP line)
- At least one ethernet cable (ideally more, for wired devices)
- Power outlets for both the modem and router
Your ISP account credentials (username and password for the ISP portal, not your Wi-Fi) may be needed during modem activation. Have them on hand.
Step 2 — Connect the modem to your ISP line
The connection type depends on your internet service:
- Cable internet: coax cable screws into the back of the modem
- DSL: phone line (RJ11 connector) into the DSL port on the modem
- Fiber: ethernet cable from the fiber ONT (a small box on your wall) into the modem, or directly into the router if your ISP provides a router-ready fiber connection
Plug the modem into power. Wait at least 5 minutes for it to connect to your ISP’s network. The indicator lights should stabilize. If you are activating a new modem, you may need to call your ISP or activate it through their website before it will connect.
Step 3 — Connect the router to the modem
Take an ethernet cable from the modem’s output port (often labeled “LAN” or “Internet”) and plug it into the router’s WAN port (sometimes labeled “Internet,” often a different color from the LAN ports). Plug the router into power and wait 2 minutes for it to boot.
At this point, the router has an internet connection but no Wi-Fi name or password set up yet. Some routers broadcast a default network during setup. Do not use it yet.
Step 4 — Configure your router
Open a browser on a laptop connected to the router by ethernet (or the default Wi-Fi network if needed). Go to 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 — one of these will load the router’s admin panel. Check the sticker on the bottom of your router if neither works; the correct address is usually printed there.
Log in with the default admin credentials (also on the sticker). Then do four things in this order:
- Change the admin password. This is not the Wi-Fi password. The admin password protects the router’s configuration panel. Default credentials (often admin/admin or admin/password) are publicly listed and are the most common way home routers get compromised.
- Set your Wi-Fi name (SSID). Choose anything. Avoid including your address, full name, or ISP name.
- Set a strong Wi-Fi password. At least 12 characters. A random passphrase works well.
- Set security to WPA3 or WPA2-AES. Find this in the wireless security settings. WPA3 is preferred if your router supports it. Avoid WEP and TKIP — they are outdated and insecure.
Step 5 — Connect your devices
Now connect everything to the network:
- Wired devices (TV, desktop, gaming console): ethernet cable from the device to any LAN port on the router. No configuration needed.
- Wireless devices (phones, laptops, tablets): open Wi-Fi settings, select your new network name, enter the Wi-Fi password.
If you have a printer, smart TV, or other devices you plan to connect over Wi-Fi, set them up one at a time. Most modern devices connect within 30 seconds.
Step 6 — Test your speed
On a wired device, go to fast.com (Netflix’s speed test, clean and simple) or speedtest.net. Run the test and compare the result to the speed listed in your ISP plan.
- Getting 80% or more of your plan speed on wired: your setup is working correctly.
- Getting less than 70% on wired: call your ISP. The problem is upstream of your router.
- Wired speed is fine but Wi-Fi is slow: normal to some degree. Wi-Fi is always slower and more variable than wired. If the gap is extreme, router placement matters (more on this below).
Router placement and Wi-Fi coverage
Your router placement has a bigger impact on Wi-Fi coverage than almost any hardware upgrade. A few principles:
- Place the router centrally in your home, not tucked in a corner or closet.
- Keep it off the floor and away from microwaves, cordless phones, and dense metal objects.
- Walls reduce signal, concrete walls severely. If your router is on one side of a concrete wall, expect poor signal on the other side.
- Higher placement (shelf or wall mount) generally beats lower placement.
Mesh vs single router: what you actually need
Mesh systems (Eero, Google Nest Wi-Fi, TP-Link Deco) use multiple nodes placed around your home to create a single seamless network. They are genuinely useful in specific situations. They are often sold to people who do not need them.
- Get mesh if: your home is over 2,000-2,500 sq ft, you have multiple floors with thick walls between them, or a single centrally-placed router cannot reach parts of the house you need covered.
- Skip mesh if: your home is under 1,500 sq ft, has normal drywall construction, and your router is centrally placed. A $100-150 Wi-Fi 6 router will cover it.
Do not spend $300-400 on a mesh system to solve a router placement problem. Move the router first, then reassess.
Security basics
Four things that are worth doing once your network is running:
- Enable WPA3 or WPA2-AES (covered in Step 4). Do not leave it on older security modes.
- Create a separate guest network for IoT devices: smart TVs, security cameras, smart speakers, robot vacuums. These devices often have weak security. Keeping them on a separate network limits the damage if one is compromised.
- Keep router firmware updated. Check the admin panel every few months, or enable auto-updates if your router supports it. Firmware updates patch security vulnerabilities.
- Disable remote management if it is enabled by default. You almost certainly do not need to access your router admin panel from outside your home.
The takeaway
A solid home network is a one-afternoon project that you set up once and rarely think about again. Buy the modem and router separately, connect them in the right order, configure the admin panel before anything else, and run ethernet to every device that does not move. The entire setup costs under $200 and outperforms the gateway unit your ISP rents you for $15 a month.
If anything goes wrong later, restart the modem first (wait 60 seconds), then the router. That fixes roughly 80% of home network problems.
