The Complete Morse Code Guide: Alphabet, History, and How to Learn It
Morse code is 190 years old and still the fallback when everything else fails. Here is the whole alphabet, the phrases worth memorizing, and how the professionals actually learn it.
Morse code was invented by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail in the 1830s for the electric telegraph. It made instantaneous long-distance communication possible for the first time in human history — decades before radio, over a century before the internet. Almost two centuries later, it’s still used by amateur radio operators, maritime services, aviation, and — surprisingly often — as the ultimate fallback when every other communication method fails.
The full alphabet
The International Morse Code alphabet uses dots (., called “dits”) and dashes (-, called “dahs”). A dash is three times as long as a dot when sent. Here it is in full:

Digits 0 through 9

There’s a pattern here: 1 through 5 use N dots followed by (5-N) dashes; 6 through 0 use N dashes followed by (10-N) dots. Once you see it, digits are much easier to memorise than letters.
Punctuation (less-standard, but well-known)

How letters, words, and spaces separate
In written Morse (like what you’d type):
- A single space separates letters.
/(space-slash-space) separates words.
So HELLO WORLD is:

When Morse is sent audibly or via light, the timing does the same job: a dot is one unit, a dash is three, gap between parts of one letter is one, gap between letters is three, and gap between words is seven.
Phrases worth memorising
SOS — the international distress signal
... --- ...
Adopted as the international distress call in 1908. The pattern was chosen not because it stands for “Save Our Souls” (that’s a backronym) but because it’s unmistakable: three short, three long, three short, in a rhythm no other sequence can be mistaken for. If you ever need it in an emergency and don’t remember any other Morse, this is the one to know.
CQ — calling any station
-.-. --.-
Amateur radio operators send this when they’re open to a conversation with whoever’s listening. If you tune around the amateur bands during a contest weekend, you’ll hear this constantly.

Prosigns
Prosigns are two letters run together as one continuous character:
- AR (
.-.-.) — “end of message” - SK (
...-.-) — “end of transmission” - BT (
-...-) — “break” (paragraph separator) - KN (
-.--.) — “over to you specifically, no one else answer”
The history in one paragraph
Samuel Morse patented the telegraph in 1837; his assistant Alfred Vail is credited with most of the actual code. The first “American Morse” had different letters for numbers and used variable dot lengths — a mess. In 1848 a European conference standardised what became International Morse, dropping the messy bits. Marconi’s invention of practical radio in the 1890s made Morse the language of ship-to-shore communication. It stayed the maritime standard until 1999 when GMDSS (satellite-based) officially replaced it. Amateur radio and specialised military use kept it alive; smartphones killed everything else.
How to actually learn Morse
You can’t learn Morse from a chart. Staring at “A is dot-dash” and trying to memorise it letter by letter is the way everyone tries first and it fails within an hour. The methods that work:
- Koch method — start with two letters at target speed, add a new letter every time you can copy the current set at ~90% accuracy. Standard in amateur radio training. Free apps: LCWO (lcwo.net), Morse Machine, Ham Morse.
- Farnsworth timing — send each letter at the target final speed (say 20 WPM) but stretch the gaps between letters and words so you have time to think. Gradually shrink the gaps as you improve. Prevents the “plateau at 10 WPM” that a naive learner hits.
- Sound-first, never sight — always learn Morse by its sound (“di-dah” for A, “dah-di-di-dit” for B), never by looking at dots and dashes on a page. The sight-reader’s brain converts every symbol twice and hits a ceiling fast; the sound-learner’s brain hears letters directly.
- Realistic goals — 5 WPM in a month of daily practice is achievable; 20 WPM in a year; 40+ WPM takes years of use. Ham radio’s old code test was 13 WPM for a General class license.
